Once
described as the "heartbeat of Rotary,"
Community Service, the third Avenue of Service, is a multi-pronged
effort to improve the quality of life within a village or
municipality. Rotarians have long been making substantial and
lasting contributions to their communities. To a large extent,
Rotary's reputation is built on the Community Service projects
undertaken by Rotarians.
Rotarians have been deeply involved in serving their communities
since the establishment of the first club. The history of every
Rotary club contains a record of projects reflecting the third part
of Rotary's Object: "The application of the ideal of service in each
Rotarian's personal, business, and community life."
Duties
The chairman of the community service committee shall be responsible
for all community service activities and shall supervise and
coordinate the work of all committees appointed on particular phases
of community service.
Community Service Committees
Operating under the Community Service are:
Human Development Committee - promotes the welfare of all human
beings in the community.
Community Development Committee - undertakes service activities
designed to build a better community physically.
Environmental Protection Committee - aims to "Preserve Planet
Earth."
Partners in Service Committee - provides leadership training to
Rotary-sponsored groups such as Rotaract and Interact clubs and
Rotary Community Corps.
Literacy Month (July) and New Generations Month (September) fall
under the Community Service. During these months, Rotary Clubs
worldwide emphasize their commitment to literacy and youth with
special projects and programs.
