AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND

The ARHRF was established in 1981 as the first national community service project of Rotary Australia.

The initial area of research supported was Cot Death, and a project funded by ARHRF was able to find a major cause of death among young babies. This is now acclaimed around the world.

The areas of research since have included Environmental Health Problems of the Aged, Adolescent Health, Family Health, Ross River Virus, Pre-Hospital Emergency Care, Malaria and now possible our most serious challenge Mental Illness.

AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND

(ARHRF)

"Good health for all Australians"

All funds raised through Mr T’s Incredible Journey 2005 will be applied to provide research grants and scholarships in the area of Mental Health through ARHRF, one of the largest independent healthy research bodies in Australia.

Mental health problems and mental illness are estimated to affect

o Over 20% of the adult population in their lifetime

o 10-15% of young people in any one year

ARHRF has invested at least $5 million into research projects over the last 4 years.

o All donations over $2 to ARHRF are tax deductible

o Overhead costs of the fund are minimal as most of the administration work is carried out on an honorary basis

o Break through research has identified the gene that causes energy loss. This has allowed work to start on an anti-aging drug.

o Researchers identified the gene responsible for sudden heart attacks in active young people. Siblings can now be tested to enable precautionary treatment
